| Dive Description | |
| Beautiful stands of staghorn coral and gorgonians highlight Crocker Reef. Several sandy chutes break up the reef fingers, creating a multitude of mini-canyons. The reef is extensive, and anywhere else in the world would likely be subdivided into multiple reefs. We have described the main reef and Crocker Ridges, but Crocker is really big. As there are no markers or buoys, be sure you anchor in a sand patch. Two miles landward is Hens & Chickens Reef, separated from Crocker by a broad sandy floor. As you move southwards, the coral fingers transform into a miniwall, known as Crocker Wall, encrusted with barrel sponges, sea fans, and multiple species of coral, including star coral and finger coral. Beware of the fire coral, which hurts for about 20 minutes after exposure to skin (vinegar will cool the pain). The wall moves in a southerly direction, ranging from 75 to 80 feet. Nurse sharks, sea turtles, amberjacks and various rays mix with reef tropicals. |
